Description

Preparatory study for the painting decorating one of the panels in the Hotel Colón in Barcelona, which stood on the corner of Plaça Catalunya and Passeig de Gràcia. It opened in 1902 and was home to the city’s most upscale café and restaurant. It was also the meeting place for different artists who had embraced the noucentista movement under the patronage of their friend and patron Lluís Plandiura. In 1936, a group of anarchists entered the building and fired bullets at some of the art works, believing they symbolised the bourgeoisie they were fighting against. Nogués is said to have portrayed himself as the barman in the definitive version of the painting.
