Description

The painting depicts a sailor sitting with his head tilted slightly to one side. He is wearing a blue top and a white shirt. In the background there is a maritime landscape with figures mending nets and buildings. It is one of the few portraits Nogués painted at an easel. In the lower left-hand corner, we can read: “Al amich Serra / Francesc Xavier Nogués” and, in another colour, maybe added later, the date: “1908”. The work was dedicated to the modernista ceramicist and Nogués’ good friend, Antoni Serra i Fiter.

We would like to thank Antoni Serra’s grandson, the artist Jordi Serra i Moragas, who is the owner of the work, for his assistance in enabling us to include this painting in our catalogue.

Notes

The painting featured on the cover of issue 142 of the magazine D’ací i d’allà, October 1929.
It is in an acceptable/good state of conservation, but some later overpainting, paint blisters and craquelures can be seen. On the reverse, at the top left, in ink: “28”, probably from the inventory of Antoni Serra’s estate, as his grandson Jordi Serra tells us. Remnants of an old torn and illegible paper label on the reverse side of the frame.”
