Description

The artist’s notebook reveals that there are three known states of this print. The first two are similar and were made using the drypoint technique with subtle and slight differences. There is a problem with the third state, where the ground has been burnished, among other details, and aquatint has been used. We believe that the print “Europa” may be the third state of this print and that the third state described in the notebook is in fact a fourth state. The original title is thought to have been erased and replaced with this peculiar one “X X”.
