Description
A book published by the Cultural Services at the Front of the Catalan government’s Department of Culture in 1938, at the height of the Spanish Civil War. Its aim was to bring together humorous and satirical texts about the city to provide the troops with light, entertaining reading that might allow them to momentarily forget the hardships of the brutal conflict. The volume includes carefully selected texts by the following authors: Robert Robert, Frederic Soler, Emili Vilanova, Albert Llanas, Narcís Oller, Pompeu Gener, Francesc Manuel Pau, Joan Pons i Massaveu, Simó Alsina i Clos, Apel·les Mestres, and Josep Feliu i Codina. They were all born in the 19th century and most of their literary output dates from this period. This book was published as part of the Quaderns del Front de Cultura collection, Barcelona, 1938. 316 pages, with a cover illustration and a further 48 illustrations by Xavier Nogués. It was reissued by Premsa Catalana, Barcelona, in 1989.
We would like to thank the Joaquim Folch i Torres library at the MNAC, and especially its head, Yolanda Ruiz Ruiz, for their assistance in cataloguing this work.
