Description
The old farmhouse of Can Cardona in Sant Just Desvern has a series of tiles designed by Xavier Nogués (pre-1920). Its current owner, Daniel Cardona Pera, is the grandson of the former mayor of Sant Just, Daniel Cardona i Civit. We know through oral testimony that Civit was a friend of Joan Salvat Papasseit (writer, publisher and a friend of Nogués who wrote a number of the publications the artist worked on) and these tiles ended up at the farmhouse as a result of this friendship. They are currently in two areas. Four of them are inside the farmhouse and the rest are outside, on the wall of an old well. This tile decorates the well and its poor state of conservation is probably due to being exposed to the elements for so many years. We attach a black and white photograph of the well taken in 1924 (the small ceramic tile in the centre is not the one by Nogués). We would like to thank the Centre d’Estudis Santjustencs and the owner of Can Cardona for their generous contributions. Image rights: Daniel Cardona.
