Description

Original drawing by Xavier Nogués for the Associació de Música da Càmera, showing the name of the association painted on some musical instruments. It was submitted as a suggested logo for the organisation. On the reverse of the drawing there was a letter (long since removed) from the artist to his friend Ramon Reventós, commenting on the work. (Fons Manuel Clausells. Doc. 5986; FC48 Arxiu Clausells – Miscellaneous works (III)).

The Associació de Música Da Camera was founded in Barcelona in April 1913 by members of the city’s bourgeoisie who were lovers of art and music. In 1917, Manuel Clausells took up the post of secretary. The association was dissolved in 1936 following his murder that same year. It usually held its concerts at the Palau de la Música, where it was based for many years.
The artist Joan Abelló purchased Manuel Clausells’ entire music archive from a Barcelona antiques dealer and since 2006 it has been the property of the Manuel Clausells Archive Documentation Centre at the Museu Municipal Joan Abelló in Mollet del Vallès. The documents held in the archive are an invaluable resource that gives us an in-depth insight into Barcelona’s music scene in the early 20th century. Since 2024, the Orfeó Català Documentation Centre (CEDOC), working in collaboration with the Museu Abelló, has been processing and digitising the Manuel Clausells archive and putting its contents online. This drawing was featured in the exhibition held in the foyer of Barcelona’s Palau de la Música from 24th October 2025 to 1st March 2026 (curated by Marta Grassot, head of the CEDOC).

We would like to thank Pepa Ventura, director of the Museu Joan Abelló, Fundació Municipal d’Art, for her assistance in cataloguing this work, as well as the CEDOC at the Palau de la Música.
