Description

There are two known states of this print. The first is an etching produced in three stages. The second state (MNAC) is rich in the tonal effects of aquatint. It is surprising that there isn’t even the smallest “crevé”. This is one of Nogués’ finest prints and the movement of the characters and the graceful, balanced composition remind us of his drawings for La Cataluña pintoresca. We are adding a print from the Palau Antiguitats gallery signed in pencil (December 2022).

Dimensions: 26.3x30.8cm (platemark)

Description

There are two known states of this print. The first is an etching produced in four stages. The second (MNAC) uses the aquatint technique with the tonal effects achieved in five or six stages using one type of resin. The print is highly accomplished technically and the figures are well balanced and evoke a solemn feeling of grandeur. The admirable contrast between the whites of the sky and the gradations of the dark tone are particularly remarkable. We are adding a print held from Palau Antiguitats gallery. This one has been cut on the plate mark.(December 2022).

Technique: Etching and aquatint

Dimensions: 30x39.5cm (platemark)

Location

MNAC, Barcelona, núm. 5057 (1st state)

Description

There are three known states of this print. The first is an etching with the slight tonal effects of aquatint (in the sky, the greys on the ground, the mountain, agave plant and the figure). Many elements have been erased in the second state, as can be seen in the photos. Even more have been removed in the third state and a boy has been added, his arms raised, in place of the girl... It would appear that these were really three different works due to the differences between one state and another. The catalogue for the exhibition at La Pinacoteca only mentions a single proof.

Dimensions: 39x36cm (platemark)

Description

This is one of Nogués’ most important works. His observation of the subjects, the rhythm of the composition and the highly accomplished drypoint technique are wonderfully and successfully combined. Nogués reveals his liking for detail, which he resolves with technical flair, in his depiction of this couple in a café.

Description

Small-format experimental work produced in Olot. Nogués had never used the soft varnish technique before and the lines are vaguely reminiscent of Nonell’s work. The grey tones give it a similar appearance to a lithograph.
