Description
One of the key works of 20th-century Catalan satirical humour in which Xavier Nogués playfully mocks certain attitudes and behaviours with a gallery of distinctive, often endearing yet slightly pathetic characters. He focuses on the most visible human features –beards, hairstyles, noses– and clothing, exaggerating and distorting them to create vivid caricatures that bring out their flaws and virtues more sharply than a conventional portrait. Marked by wit as well as a refined, cultured tone, his figures seem full of life: they move, glance sideways, stretch and run, inhabiting a space somewhere between realism and expressionism. In the preface, Ramon Reventós offers an acerbic analysis of the themes explored by the artist –such as the seven deadly sins– and the characters he depicts, who are often from the well-to-do classes.
Preface by Ramon Reventós. Illustrations by Xavier Nogués. Salvat-Papasseit Llibreters, Barcelona, 1922, first edition. 5 leaves + 50 illustrations by Nogués.
